                                                                  RESOURCE General Guidelines

Type your paper on a computer.

Print it on white 8.5 x 11 inch paper.

Double-space the text. Use Times New Roman, size 12.

Set the margins to 1 inch on all sides.

MLA is a parenthetical documentation system. A parenthetical documentation system has two parts:

In-text citation in parentheses.

A list of works cited at the end of the paper.

In-text Citations

Parenthetical citations are used to document any external sources used within a document. You must use in-text citations when you quote or paraphrase an external source. Immediately following a quotation or a paraphrase of a source’s ideas, you place the author’s name followed by a space and the relevant page number(s). Parenthetical citations direct readers to the full bibliographic citations listed in the Works Cited.

Example: Human beings have been described as "symbol-using animals" (Burke 3).

Works Cited

Begin your Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your paper.

Label the page "Works Cited".

Citations are listed alphabetically by author’s name.
